Assigning a greeter to the 9am door because the roster is empty is how you get a polite decline on Saturday night. The same thing happens when you place someone on production or the welcome team without asking first. The volunteer knows their week. The assignment does not.

Let them pick. They see open positions they already hold on the team. They take the slot they can keep. The name lands in Planning Center. That is the whole product: a public signup sheet for any ministry, written into the plan you already run.

Planning Center Services already has the team and the positions. Church Center already has a home for your people. Planning Center reminders still go out after someone is on the plan. The sheet is simple on purpose. Team members pick slots they already hold. Leaders can see fill-rate and which slots are still open. People who are not on the team can submit an interest request so you can follow up in Planning Center instead of inventing a second roster.
